Bao Buns with Chicken
A delicious combination of soft bao buns, juicy chicken, and fresh vegetables.
Ingredients
- Pre-made bao buns
- 400g chicken (thigh or breast)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 egg
- 2 cm fresh ginger (grated)
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Chinese 5-spice powder
- Fresh cilantro
For the vegetable mix:
- Carrots (julienne cut)
- Cucumber (thin strips)
- Vinegar (rice vinegar or regular)
Topping:
- Hoisin sauce
Instructions

Prepare the chicken:
- Cut the chicken into small pieces.
- Whisk the egg and mix it with cornstarch, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and 5-spice powder.
- Add the chicken to the mixture and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.

Make the vegetable mix:
- Combine the julienned carrots and cucumber in a bowl.
- Add a splash of vinegar and let it sit for a while.

Cook the chicken:
- Heat a pan over medium heat and cook the marinated chicken until golden and fully cooked.

Steam the bao buns:
- Steam the bao buns according to the package instructions.

Assemble:
- Carefully open the warm bao buns.
- Spread a little hoisin sauce inside each bun.
- Add the cooked chicken and top with the vegetable mix.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro.
