Brazilian White Rice

Servings: 4 people

Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil (or olive oil)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 2 minutes until soft and translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, stirring to avoid burning.
  4. Add the drained rice and stir for 1–2 minutes, coating the grains in the oil and aromatics.
  5. Pour in the hot water and add the salt. Stir once, then bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  7. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, replace part of the water with chicken or vegetable broth.
  • Serve with beans, grilled meats, or sautéed vegetables for a traditional Brazilian meal.
