Brazilian White Rice
Servings: 4 people
Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 cups hot water
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil (or olive oil)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
- In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 2 minutes until soft and translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, stirring to avoid burning.
- Add the drained rice and stir for 1–2 minutes, coating the grains in the oil and aromatics.
- Pour in the hot water and add the salt. Stir once, then bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.
Tips
- For extra flavor, replace part of the water with chicken or vegetable broth.
- Serve with beans, grilled meats, or sautéed vegetables for a traditional Brazilian meal.
